Onion industry trials demonstrate efficacy of SOLVIGO

Onion Field

New Zealand onion growers have limited options to protect their crops against onion thrips, so are aware they need to use their current options wisely.

With its combination of two active ingredients (thiamethoxam and abamectin, Group 4a and Group 6 respectively), SOLVIGO® insecticide is an important component of a well-considered, robust spray programme for onion thrips control.

Paul Hassan, Syngenta Technical Services Lead, says SOLVIGO® is best applied in the early to mid part of the crop growth cycle, when onions are actively growing and the leaf tissue is soft.

“Use at this time helps to optimise the highly systemic and translaminar properties of SOLVIGO®, before onion thrips populations get established in the crop,” says Paul.

Recent trials undertaken in conjunction with Onions NZ demonstrated that SOLVIGO® is still performing well when used in the early and mid-part of an onion thrips insecticide programme.

“Results from these trials also showed a clear correlation between effective onion thrips control and Stemphylium management, highlighting the importance of using high quality products to keep onion thrips populations low throughout the season.

“And, remember that crop monitoring is an important tool to monitor pest pressure in your blocks from the 4 to 5 leaf stage.”

Best use recommendations:

  • SOLVIGO® should be applied at a rate of 750 mL/ha.
  • The performance of SOLVIGO® is significantly enhanced by the addition of a superspreader (such as Du-Wett*) to improve coverage. Du-Wett* assists in getting SOLVIGO® down the neck of the onions where onion thrips like to hide.
  • For resistance management, growers should follow the industry resistance management strategy for onion thrips where the rotation of insecticide Mode of Action groups is recommended, with each insecticide group used in a cluster of up to three sprays to target a single generation of onion thrips.
