Cereal Herbicide Application

Autumn Grass Weeds

For pre-emergence applications where the soil is the target, medium to course spray droplets will provide good coverage with reduced risk of spray drift. Patchy weed control most usually comes from cloddy seedbeds, wrong choice of nozzles or spray drift.

For post-emergence applications, finer spray droplets will improve retention on difficult to wet grass weeds such as wild oats, but increase the risk of spray drift.  The use of angled nozzles can increase spray coverage on small grass weeds and soil clods significantly compared to vertical flat fan nozzles.

Water volume
100 L/ha and above.

Nozzle choice
For pre and early post-emergence applications (prior to stem extension) use DEFY 3D nozzles alternating forwards and backwards along the boom. For later post-emergence applications use conventional flat fan nozzles or AMISTAR® AI nozzles.

Application speed
If conditions are sub-optimal slow down and apply at 12 km/h.

Spring Grass Weeds

Water volume
100-200 l/ha

Nozzle choice
Use conventional flat fan or AMISTAR® AI nozzles. The use of angled nozzles is not recommended in tall or dense crops when the target is situated towards the base of the crop.

Application speed
12 km/h is optimum.

Cereal Fungicide Application

T0/T1

Cereals present a tall, thin target. Bigger spray droplets penetrate better into the canopy than fine mist, which is either dragged in by turbulence or drifts away. Typically, a standard flat fan puts half the spray on the crop at GS30/31, the other half is available for weed control, or is wasted to the ground.  Nozzles can be selected to suit different application targets.

Low drift nozzles have proven very effective and good results from air induction (AI) nozzles can be expected. The AMISTAR® AI nozzle has been specifically designed to achieve the best results with fungicides – providing the ideal spectrum of droplet sizes with reduced spray drift. Syngenta cereal fungicides (AMISTAR®, ELATUS® Pus and SEGURIS® Flexi) are robust and work well when applied as medium/coarse sprays at reduced water volumes (i.e. 100 L/ha).

T2/T3

The best results with T2 (flag leaf) and particularly T3 (ear wash) applications will be obtained by keeping the spray near the top of the crop and covering the plant on all sides. The AMISTAR® AI nozzle achieves this at 12 km/h by angling the spray by 10 degrees to counteract the forward speed of the sprayer.

AMISTAR® AI nozzles reduce spray drift by up to 75% compared to a standard flat fan nozzle, and produce more droplets per litre than any other air induction nozzle.
